PCIe 7.0 Specification Version 0.5 Released, Targets 512 GB/s Bandwidth

The PCI-SIG organization has announced the availability of version 0.5 of the upcoming PCIe 7.0 specification for member review. This marks the official first draft incorporating feedback since version 0.3 was released in June 2023.

The PCIe 7.0 specification remains on schedule for full release in 2025. Key goals for the new standard include:

  • Delivering 128 GT/s raw bit rate and up to 512 GB/s bi-directional bandwidth with a x16 configuration
  • Utilizing PAM4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation with 4 levels) signaling
  • Focusing on optimizing channel parameters and reach
  • Continuing low-latency and high-reliability performance
  • Improving power efficiency
  • Maintaining full backwards compatibility with previous PCIe generations

PCIe 7.0 technology is targeted at meeting the high bandwidth demands of data-intensive applications like 800G Ethernet, AI/ML, hyperscale data centers, high performance computing, quantum computing, and cloud infrastructure. The 7.0 architecture concentrates on enhancing channel characteristics and reach while increasing power efficiency.

With this version 0.5 draft release, development of the PCIe 7.0 standard remains on track for final specification delivery next year, providing the next major leap in PCIe interconnect performance.
